Do you find yourself constantly switching between multiple documents or spreadsheets? If so, it may be time to upgrade to two monitors.
A couple of weeks ago I was surprised to learn many lawyers and financial firms only use one screen. If you’re using one screen right now, it is hard to imagine why a second screen would even be useful.
That is what I thought before I used two screens – I could not see the benefit. It was a different story once I got my two screens going!
Productivity
Two monitors will dramatically increase your productivity. Don’t believe me? Both Microsoft and Jon Peddie research found that using multiple monitors increases productivity by 9 and 30% (respectively).
Cross referencing
If you work with multiple documents, spreadsheets or websites, flicking between pages can become confusing, frustrating and lead to editing mistakes. Rather than opening closing documents as you work, or squeezing several documents onto one screen, you can easily display multiple documents side by side.
Superior online training & meetings
Do you partake in webinars, online conferences or training? Having multiple screens allows you to view the webinar, training or online meeting while still taking notes or following instructions.
Better communication
A second monitor allows you to reply to emails or chat (such as on Skype for Business) while keeping your designated main assignment on the primary monitor.
Take a look at the big picture
Almost every employee in a law firm will benefit from the above. If you’re used to working on one screen and feel that you don’t need two, I recommend at least trying it for a month or so – I assure you, you won’t want to change back.
The only disadvantages to keep in mind are:
- Desk space. More desk space is required to fit two screens.
- Cost. Whilst the cost for an additional screen is considerably low, it is still something to consider.
From my experience and with evidence from studies the advantages vastly outweigh the disadvantages, so if it is something you have been or are now considering, contact itro for advice on what would work best with your current workstation.
